Microdosing magic mushrooms is gaining steam among MMA, UFC, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and kickboxing athletes. Let’s explore why.
Microdosing Increases Perception
In an episode of the Joe Rogan Experience on YouTube, Rogan tells of kickboxers he knows who are microdosing psilocybin magic mushrooms. These fighters say it is like they can see things before they happen and report having increased perception in ways they can’t achieve otherwise.
His interviewee, Dennis McKenna is unsurprised. McKenna is an American ethnopharmacologist, research pharmacologist, lecturer and author. He is a founding board member and director of ethnopharmacology at the Heffter Research Institute, a non-profit organization investigating the potential therapeutic uses of psychedelic medicines.
McKenna says that microdosing psilocybin helps one step out of his or her normal reference frame. With psychedelics, he explains, the background comes into the foreground and things we normally suppress become perceptible to us.
We see aspects of the world that have always been there but we haven’t seen them before because we are programmed not to.
“Microdosing puts you in a place where you can notice these things”
He says, It’s no wonder athletes are using themselves as microdosing guinea pigs. With Reddit threads, YouTube videos, and blogs providing an abundance of anecdotal experiences, microdosing is becoming a common term.
The more people read, the more it appears they want to learn: in the last year alone, Google has received three times more queries on microdosing than it did the year before.
Athletes are sharing their experiences online, including statements about testing: because the dose of psilocybin is a sub-perceptual amount, approximately one tenth of a psychedelic dose that produces a high, psilocybin is not showing up in routine drug tests (though it can show up in extensive drug testing).
In another interview with Neil Brennan on the Joe Rogan Experience, Rogan tells of a friend who kickboxes and microdoses mushrooms.
His friend says he is way sharper than he ever was before and that he feels like he has some sort of psychic ability when he is sparring.
This is a far cry from the way magic mushrooms were used in the 60’s and 70’s. With microdosing, the goal is not to get high, it is human optimization.
McKenna and Rogan continue their conversation and McKenna explains another major reason people microdose. In summary, he says we often favour one sensory modality and sacrifice all the other inputs:
Psychedelics are plant teachers because they increase our perception and teach us there is a different way to be in the world.
Microdosing and Jiu Jitsu
It takes a lot of guts to sit in front of a camera and talk about microdosing psilocybin. After all, it is still illegal in nearly every country in the world. Still, some athletes are going on camera and are voluntarily becoming the faces of what it means to advance their technique with microdosing in anticipation of producer Billy Barnes documentary, Microdosing | Jiu Jitsu
Various athletes forego anonymity and talk about how microdosing has helped them through their plateaus, helping the fight stagnation and find different approaches. What is it about microdosing that is the means to this end?
Ultimately, microdosing stimulates areas of the brain that promote creative thinking, helping athletes to:
- find new techniques
- dissolve boundaries
- see things from a different point of view
- pick up on their opponents patterns more quickly
- access flow state- when the thinking mind is quieted, resulting in complete immersion in their sport
- stop over-thinking and just to act
Neuro Growth has researched the benefits of microdosing with the added neuro-protective benefits of lion’s mane medicinal mushrooms and mucuna, a superfood that optimizes dopamine levels.
The potential for mushrooms to benefit the brain are remarkable and could greatly benefit athletes, particularly those pursuing sports with higher risks for brain injuries like concussions.

This is a conversation that is just getting started, but one thing is for certain: it isn’t one that is going to stop. The effects of microdosing on the mind body connection as it relates to sport is compelling and as more athletes incorporate regimens into their training, we expect to see studies being pursued to quantify and qualify their experiences.
